Η Μονή Οδηγητρίας είναι ανδρική μονή που βρίσκεται σε οχυρή θέση των Αστερουσίων Ορέων, σε υψόμετρο 250m. Η μονή είναι προσβάσιμη μέσω του χωριού Σίβα της Μεσαράς. Το μοναστήρι είναι από τα ιστορικότερα στην Κρήτη και διαθέτει μια τεράστια περιουσία, με πολλά παρεκκλήσια και τεράστιες εκτάσεις γης στα Αστερούσια Όρη.
Τα Αστερούσια Όρη ήταν ίσως η σημαντικότερη κοιτίδα του ασκητισμού στην Κρήτη, με κέντρα το AΑγιοφάραγγο και το Μάρτσαλο, , τα οποία ανήκουν στη μονή. Γι’ αυτό και λέγονται από πολλούς ως το Άγιον Όρος της Κρήτης, όπως βέβαια και η περιοχή του Μιραμπέλου με τις πολυάριθμες μονές της. Στην ανάπτυξη της τόσο έντονης μοναστικής παράδοσης συνέβαλε η ιστορία του Αποστόλου Παύλου, που λέγεται ότι κατά το ταξίδι του προς τη Ρώμη σταμάτησε σε αυτή την περιοχή των Αστερουσίων.
Σε αυτόν τον ιερό τόπο λοιπόν, κτίστηκε τον 14ο αιώνα η μονή Οδηγήτριας. Το όνομα της σχετίζεται πιθανότατα με κάποιο αντίγραφο της περίφημης εικόνας της Μονής Οδηγών της Κωνσταντινούπολης, η οποία αποδίδεται στον Ευαγγελιστή Λουκά και είναι από τις πιο αγαπητές και θαυματουργές εικόνες στο Βυζάντιο.
Η μονή ήταν κτισμένη με φρουριακή αρχιτεκτονική και μέρος του τείχους της είναι ορατό ακόμη και σήμερα. Τα κτίρια του συγκροτήματος έχουν ως κέντρο τους το δίκλιτο καθολικό της μονής, που είναι αφιερωμένο στην Κοίμηση της Θεοτόκου και στους Αποστόλους Πέτρο και Παύλο. Υπήρχε και τρίτο κλίτος, αφιερωμένο στον Άγιο Φανούριο, αλλά έχει κατεδαφιστεί. Κοντά στην είσοδο του περίβολου βρίσκεται ο θρυλικός Πύργος του Ξωπατέρα με την σπουδαία ιστορία του. Επίσης, στο συγκρότημα θα δείτε το φουρνόσπιτο, το ελαιοτριβείο, το πατητήρι, τις αποθήκες, το τυροκέλι (κελάρι για τυριά), ένα πηγάδι, τον ξενώνα (παλιό ηγουμενείο), το ηγουμενείο με τη βιβλιοθήκη, τα κελιά των μοναχών, αλλά και τους τάφους των πατέρων της μονής.
Στη μονή μόνασαν και οι αδελφοί Παρθένιος και Ευμένιος, οι οποίοι αργότερα ίδρυσαν την μονή Κουδουμά και σήμερα τιμώνται ως Άγιοι. Επίσης, τις δύσκολες εποχές της Τουρκικής κατοχής, η μονή έγινε σταυροπηγιακή, δηλαδή διοικούνταν απευθείας από τον Πατριάρχη, ώστε να εξασφαλιστεί η περιουσία της. Στην Μονή υπάγονται και πλήθος ερημητηρίων, αλλά και εξωκκλησιών με αξιόλογες τοιχογραφίες. Ανάμεσα τους είναι ο σπηλαιώδης ναός της Αγίας Κυριακής (7 Ιουλίου) και ο ναός του Αγίου Αντωνίου στο Αγιοφάραγγο, η Παναγία στο Μαρτσαλιώτικο φαράγγι, οι Άγιοι Ευτυχιανοί (17 Αυγούστου), ο Άγιος Ανδρέας (30 Νοεμβρίου) και ο Άγιος Ιωάννης του Προδρόμου (29 Αυγούστου) στο Βαθύ Λαγκό,
Επίσης, σώζονται τέσσερις εικόνες του ζωγράφου Αγγέλου (15ος αιώνας). Αυτές είναι ο Χριστός η άμπελος, η Θεοτόκος Ζωοδόχος Πηγή, ο Ασπασμός Πέτρου και Παύλου και ο Άγιος Ιωάννης ο Πρόδρομος.
